Chicken kurma ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅ˜

This is one of our favorite chicken kurma and is kids friendly too since it is not very hot and spicy like the typical south Indian curry. This tastes delicious with a thick gravy and subtle aroma of spices.

A simple Indian chicken kurma recipe that pairs well with plain rice, biryani varieties, pulao, roti/chapathi. Kurma is a curry made using various ingredients like coconut, yogurt, nuts, poppy seeds, vegetables/meat and spices. This recipe is roughly adapted from theย VEGETABLE KURMA RECIPE.ย 

On every Sunday we make this simple and easy chicken kurma and have it with poori or idly. While my mother in law who is expert in making non veg curries who taught me to make all the curries with spices grinder and made a special paste which makes the urea extra tasty.

Ingredients: (Tempering )
  • Fennel seeds – 1 tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 2 tbsp
  • Cloves. – 2
  • Cinnamon – 1
  • Curry leaves – few
Tomato paste:
  • Tomato ๐Ÿ… – 2 medium
  • Mint leaves. – one hand full
  • Coriander leaves – one hand full
To grind paste:
  • Cashew nuts – 2
  • Almond. – 3
  • Fennel. – 1 / 2 tsp
  • Water. – 5 tbsp
Main ingredients :
  • Chicken ๐Ÿ“ – 300gms
  • Onion. – 2 large
  • Chili powder – 2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Salt. – 2 tbsp
Method :

Step 1 Marination :

Wash chicken cut into pieces, in a bowl add turmeric powder,salt, ginger garlic paste and curd and marinate them for 1 hour minimum.

Step 2 :

In a pan add oil,fennel seeds,cloves,cinnamon once they sizzle add in the onions ๐Ÿง… and sautรฉ them for few mins until transparent.

Step 3 :

Now add in the marinated chicken ๐Ÿ” and stir mix them with onions and add up the ginger garlic paste.

Step 4 :

In a jar take tomato ๐Ÿ… handful mint and coriander leaves and grind them to paste ,now add them to the pan and stir them until the raw smell goes off. Add chili powder,coriander powder,salt,turmeric powder and sautรฉ them for few mins.

Step 5 :

Cover and cook them for few mins . Now the chicken releases some water . Cook them in simmer for 5 more mins now. Then add the cashew,almond and fennel to jar and grind them to paste. Now finally mix them to the chicken .

Step 6 :

Now , add up a tsp of nutmeg powder for a rich flavor then ,stir them occasionally and sprinkle with some curry leaves.

Notes :
  • Always marinate the chicken a day before and put them in your fridge marinating over night for the next day cooking the chicken will be soft and juicy
  • Adding up curd makes the chicken more softer. Do not use sour curds which makes the chicken taste different.
  • Adding up cashew or almond can be done .can add any one of them or can use coconut.
