Little Millet Upma

Millets are a group of highly variable small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains. Millets are known as “Small Grains” or “Siru Thaaniyangal” in Tamil.Millets are one of the oldest foods known to humans and possibly the first cereal grain to be used for domestic purposes.Millets are also unique due to their short growing season.

Ingredients:

  • Little millet. – 1 cup
  • Onion. – 1 medium
  • Green chili. – 2
  • Cumin seeds. – 1 tsp
  • Mustard. – 1 tsp
  • Sesame oil. – 2 tbsp
  • Urid dhal. – 1 tbsp
  • Channa dhal. – 1 tbsp
  • Ginger – 1 inch
  • Curry leaves. – few
  • Water. – 3 cups
  • Salt. – as per taste
  • Turmeric – 1/2 tsp

Preparation:

Step 1 :

Cut onions and keep all that is necessary like shown in the picture. In a small kadai, add sesame oil when it is hot add in the mustard, cumin , green chili, urad dhal, channa dhal and curry leaves . when it splutters add in the onion and ginger and add some salt so that the onions gets cooked soon.

Step 2:

Now add water and when it gets boil add in the little millet and stir continuously so that there is no lumps formed. Cover cook for 10 minutes then serve it hot.

Notes:

  • Using sesame oil gives you a good flavor for the upma.
  • Usage of water can be changed according to your taste whether upma to be soft or soggy.
