Prawn is one of the seafood dish that is consumed which provide a good source of protein, healthy fats and many vitamins and minerals, yet are low in calories.
Larger prawns will take a few more minutes. You can tell when prawns and shrimp are cooked, as they will turn a pink colour. As a guide, small – medium sized shrimp will take 3 – 4 minutes, large shrimp will take 5 – 8 minutes and jumbo shrimp or prawn will need 7 – 8 minutes cooking time. When it turns to c shape and pink color it is cooked . If cooked more than that prawn will become harder and rubbery.
This prawn masala is one of the easiest yet a challenging dish since the prawn when left for extra seconds it turns harder.
Main ingredients :
- Onion 🧅 – 2 medium
- Tomato 🍅 – 1
- Ginger & Garlic paste. – 2 tsp
- Prawns 🍤 – 500gms
Other ingredients :
- Sesame oil. – 5 tbsp
- Mustard seeds. – 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds. – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves. – 1 handful
- Coriander leaves – to garnish
- Cloves. – 3
- Cinnamon. – 1 inch
- Chili powder – 2 tbsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
- Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
- Salt 🧂 – 1.5 tsp
Step 1 :
Clean prawns by removing all the veins. Rinse a few times in cold water With some turmeric powder and salt. Now cut onions and tomato and keep all the ingredients ready to start cooking 🧑🍳. Now in a pan add sesame oil once when hot add in the mustard,cumin,cloves,cinnamon and curry leaves when they splutter add in the onion and sauté them until transparent.
Once the onions is completely cooked add in the ginger garlic paste and sauté them until the raw smell goes off. Then add in the chopped tomato and cook them by covering until tomato turns mushy. Then add the chili powder, turmeric powder , coriander powder and salt.once all done add in the prawns.
Step 3 :
I’ve used tiger prawns which is bigger in size and needs 5 to 6 mins of cooking time. Mix them up and close the lid for few 5 to 6 minutes and garnish it with coriander leaves and turn off the flame. On a small pan add in sesame oil and fry some red chilies and pour them upon the prawn masala to get a authentic curry.
- Prawns when cooked leaves water so if needed as a curry cover cook them. If needed dry fry them prawn separately take them when it turns pink and c shaped
- If needs you can marinate the prawns with chili , turmeric,coriander and salt and then fry them.
